Dita Von Teese in First 3D-Printed Dress {Inspirational Look}
Dita Von Teese is well-known for recapturing the look of retro pin-ups and Hollywood starlets of yore. Here for a change, we can see her in a very forward-thinking dress which is the product of 3-D printing technology...
The dress which looks both hard and soft and a great fit for contexts like Blade Runner, Avatar, Mad Max and Disney's The Little Siren was designed by Michael Schmidt and Francis Bitonti.
Schmidt simply worked with an iPad and then turned to Shapeways to take care of the 3-D aspect. The gown is decorated with 13,000 black Swarvoski crystals and was painted black. The material the dress consists of is described as "hardened powdered nylon". The big shoulders are there because the technology apparently is excellent at building heightened structures.
"The biggest challenge in creating the dress was working with materials that weren't malleable as they came out of the printer. "To do that you have to break it down into individual components so it can become something sensual," Schmidt said. "Taking this hard plastic material and making it flow and sexy and undulate around the body."
Francis added, "The curvature is always changing as she moves. As far as difficulty goes, if you could imagine creating a piece with 3,000 unique moving individual parts."
