Scented Quote of the Day, from Pierre Bourdon:

Pierre Bourdon is the nose behind Davidoff Cool Water, Shiseido Féminité du Bois (with Christopher Sheldrake), Dior Dolce Vita, and Malle Iris Poudre, amongst others...

"The choice of a perfume has as much to do with the regional culture as with one's preferences. It is even much more controlled by existing social codes than by desires believed to be one's own."

  1. I heartily agree !

Citing the subcontinental population, and many Arabic friends, who simply wear what appeals to them, without thought of gender.

And as we know, what appeals culturally to one group, may be despised by others.

    How are you this am?

  2. Hi there,
I adore Dolce Vita and Iris Poudre, by the way. I find I am more attracted to the european view of scent than american. I like feminine , elegant scents, not unisex.
I think there is a cultural attitude towards fragrance.
    Have a great day.

  4. Hi Madelyn,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. It might be fun to try to figure out a list of uber-feminine scents. Have a great day too!

  5. I'd like to think that I am not influenced by "existing social codes," but I would be lying. I know that I don't care what popular in our American culture, but I am very much influenced by the opinions of my closest perfumista friends.

And, I would love to see a list of uber-feminine fragrances!

    Hugs!

  6. Hi R,

One thing I feel is more personal is my preference for certain notes. If you like peach or heliotrope or ylang, is it really because it corresponds to a social code? I think it refers more to your life experience, your childhood etc. I don't see peach as being marked by class for instance. Come to think of it this is probably why fruity notes are "safe" and therefore very popular; everybody has eaten certain fruits in their childhoods.
