Eau Jeune L'Echappee Belle Signed by Dominique Ropion (2009) {New Perfume}
Perfumer Dominique Ropion, a recipient of the international perfumer of the year award who is known both for his confidential creations (Frederic Malle Carnal Flower, Géranium pour Monsieur...) and mainstream creations (Ysatis, Amarige, L'Homme by Yves Saint Laurent...) is continuing to show his involvement in the creation of widely accessible mass-marketed fragrances with the composition L'Echappée Belle by Eau Jeune, a brand that is distributed in drugstores in France....He also collaborated recently with The Body Shop on the youth-oriented Love Etc.
The perfumer explained that it is equally demanding for him to work for niche brand Frederic Malle or the mass-market but that widely distributed fragrances are more nuanced, present less of a trenchent character. Ropion added that if women consumers were to be subjected to blind tests he is not altogether sure that they would necessarily prefer fragrances from the selective market.
" La parfumerie en Grande Distribution est plus nuancée. Les fragrances y ont un caractère moins marqué, moins tranchant. On arrondit davantage les angles. On y trouve des jus de grande qualité, mais il y a encore beaucoup d'a priori sur les parfums qui y sont distribués, ce qui n'est pas le cas hors de l'Hexagone. Que je travaille pour Frédéric Malle ou pour la Grande Distribution, l'exigence est la même. Si on faisait sentir en "blind test" des grands parfums du sélectif et des parfums de Grande Distribution je ne suis pas du tout sûr que les femmes préféreraient les premiers ! Ce serait d'ailleurs une expérience à tenter ..."
L'Echappée Belle is described as a floriental. Dominique Ropion points out that the composition is contrasted with the addition of a very fresh facet to the typical warmth of an oriental. He calls it in English, a "sparkling" oriental.
