Atelier Cologne have started to unveil their latest composition called Mistral Patchouli, which will launch more officially from January 2013. Named after a strong oceanic wind blowing in the coastal region of the south of France, it is described as a marine twist on a patchouli perfume...

Patchouli fragrances are especially popular in France and beloved by the French, which we realize ought to warrant a Patchouli Notebook theme as they are too numerous to easily encompass. You can start however with Réminiscence Patchouli.

The new eau de parfum is signed by perfumer Jérôme Epinette {his oeuvre includes: Byredo Bal d'Afrique, Jovoy Fougère, Poudré; Isabel Desrroiné Ilaya; Gant by Gant, amongst others}.

The nose interestingly elected to use the ingredient star anise from China to create the illusion of an oceanic accord; some plants present natural marine facets. This replaces the more classic, standard, and sometimes dreaded  "watermelon accord" (see video below) also known as an ozonic accord.

Patchouli is fractioned probably here to select its cleaner facets, and therefore could be used more easily to pull it away from its typical heavy Oriental connotations as a base note. The scent is also said to focus on a green floral facet.

Notes include: Grapefruit, Black Pepper, Star Anise, Iris, Incense, Geranium, Fraction of Patchouli from Indonesia, Benzoin, Vetiver.

Prices: $70 and $185. Available at Luckyscent.com
